Louisiana: Pro-Gun Legislation Heads to Governor’s Desk as Legislature Adjourns

Friday, the Louisiana Legislature adjourned from its 2018 regular Legislative Session. Two pro-gun bills, House Bill 602 and Senate Bill 402, were passed out of the House and Senate on final consideration and are now headed to the desk of Governor John Bel Edwards for his signature.  Please contact Governor Edwards and strongly urge him to sign these pro-gun bills into law.

House Bill 602, sponsored by Representative Blake Miguez, would explicitly allow for concealed handgun permit holders to carry a concealed firearm within 1,000 feet of any school campus.  House Bill 602 is heading to the Governor’s desk for his signature.

Senate Bill 402, sponsored by Senator Neil Riser, would allow both volunteers with a valid concealed carry permit to serve churches or houses of worship as armed security.  Further, this legislation defines training requirements for those churches whose insurance liability requires it. Senate Bill 402 is awaiting the Governor’s signature.

Again, please contact Governor John Bel Edwards at 225-342-0991and urge him to sign HB 602 and SB 402.

Your NRA ILA was instrumental in killing numerous gun control measures that would infringe on your Second Amendment rights and your right to self-defense. Some of these egregious bills included:

  • House Bill 277 sought to restrict the constitutional right of law-abiding adults aged 18 to 20 to acquire some of the most commonly-owned semi-automatic firearms for self-defense, target shooting, and hunting.
  • House Bill 400 which would require a ten day waiting period for the purchase of a firearm and makes any violation of the waiting period punishable by as much as five years in prison.
  • House Bill 473 which would prohibit the sale, manufacture, purchase, possession, or transfer of bump stocks and other “rapid-fire” devices.  The broad and overreaching language could potentially criminalize firearm modifications such as competition triggers, and ergonomic changes that are commonly done by law-abiding gun owners to make their firearms more suitable for self-defense, competition, hunting, or even overcoming disability.
  • House Bill 736 which would ban commonly-owned firearms by creating a broad definition of so-called “assault weapons” that includes a semi-automatic rifle that is threaded for a suppressor or a detachable magazine with the capacity to hold more than 10 rounds.
  • Senate Bill 274, which would prohibit the sale of commonly owned semi-automatic rifles to any person under 21 years of age.  This legislation punishes law-abiding citizens for the evil acts of criminals, does nothing to increase public safety and will prohibit law-abiding 18-20 year old adults from purchasing the most popular and effective self-defense rifle on the market.
